## What the plan must contain

- A baseline, a visible target, and a short time horizon
- Practice tasks that produce evidence instead of hours logged
- A review rule for changing the plan when reality disagrees

## Take a baseline before planning

Do the smallest realistic version of the target task now. Do not study first. If your goal is conversational Spanish, record a one-minute self-introduction. If it is spreadsheets, clean a messy table. If it is drawing, sketch the object in front of you.

Write down three things: what worked, where you stopped, and the first error that repeated. This baseline keeps the plan attached to your actual starting point. Without it, plans tend to copy a course syllabus designed for everyone.

## Choose a two-week result

Long goals need short planning windows. Pick a result you can test in 7-14 days. It should be ambitious enough to require practice and small enough that missing one evening does not destroy it.

Use this form: **By date, I will produce result under condition, and I will check it with standard.**

For example: "By next Sunday, I will give a three-minute explanation of compound interest without notes. I will check it for a correct example, clear terms, and one stated limitation."

## Turn gaps into practice tasks

Look at the baseline and name the gaps. Then write one task for each gap.

- A knowledge gap needs retrieval questions or explanation from memory.
- A recognition gap needs examples that force you to tell cases apart.
- A decision gap needs scenarios where you choose and explain a move.
- An execution gap needs repeated performance with quick feedback.

A task must end in evidence: an answer, recording, solved problem, repaired object, conversation, or draft. "Watch module three" can support a task, but it is not the task.

## Schedule outputs, not study time

Put three sessions on the calendar. Name each by its output.

**Session one:** make three attempts and diagnose the common error. **Session two:** practise the weak part with five variations. **Session three:** repeat the full task and compare it with the baseline.

Keep a minimum version for crowded days. If the full task is a 30-minute speaking session, the minimum might be one recorded answer and one correction. A minimum protects continuity without pretending that tiny effort equals full practice.

## Build feedback and retrieval into the plan

Do not leave feedback until the end. Decide where it will come from before the session: an answer key, rubric, test, recording, peer, coach, or trusted reference.

Start later sessions by retrieving the previous lesson without looking. This takes five minutes and tells you whether the learning survived the gap. ## Review the plan every week

Compare the newest output with the baseline. Ask:

1. What can I do now that I could not do before?
2. Which error still repeats?
3. Which activity changed the output?
4. What should become harder next week?

Keep the useful tasks. Drop resources that produced no change. Make one variable harder at a time: speed, complexity, independence, accuracy, or pressure. That gives the next plan a clear reason to exist.

### Common questions

#### How far ahead should I plan?

Plan concrete tasks for one or two weeks. Keep a broader direction for the next few months, but do not pretend you know the exact session you will need six weeks from now.

#### How many learning goals can I run at once?

One demanding new skill plus one light maintenance goal is a sensible limit for most adults. More goals can work, but each needs fewer sessions and progress will slow.

#### What should I do after missing a week?

Do a short retrieval check and one baseline task. Resume from the evidence instead of either starting over or assuming nothing was lost.

#### Do I need a course?

A good course can provide sequence, examples, and feedback. You still need to translate each lesson into a performance and a retry. The course is a resource inside the plan, not the plan itself.

### Plan the evidence

A plan works when it tells you what to attempt, how to inspect it, and when to try again. Keep the horizon short. Name outputs. Compare them weekly. Let the evidence revise the schedule.
