A good cold email does three things in under 120 words: it shows you understand the recipient's situation, it makes a specific small ask, and it leaves an easy way to say no. That's it.

Subject line: short, specific, no sales-speak. *"Quick question about your hiring rubric"* beats *"Helping companies scale faster."* The opener references something concrete from the recipient's public work — a recent post, a product launch, a hiring page. The body proposes a single small next step: a 15-minute call, a written reply, a yes/no answer. The closer gives them an obvious out: *"If this isn't a fit, no need to reply."*

## Three patterns that work

**The named question.** Pick one specific thing you genuinely want their view on, and ask it. *"You wrote about hiring rubrics last month — how do you handle the gap between rubric scores and actual hire/no-hire decisions?"* People answer interesting questions even from strangers; they ignore vague pitches.

**The mutual-context intro.** When you have a connection — same school, same employer, same conference talk — open with it directly. *"We were both at the Vercel meetup in March. I caught your talk on edge functions."* The connection only needs to be real, not deep.

**The small concrete offer.** Lead with something you can give, not something you want. *"I built a small audit tool for your stack — happy to send the results, no pitch attached."* Specificity and the no-strings framing both increase reply rates dramatically.

## Anti-patterns that train people to ignore you

A few patterns that look professional but kill reply rates:

- **Long openers about you.** Two sentences about your company before any signal of why you're writing trains the reader to skim and skip.
- **The fake-personal opener.** *"Hope you're having a great week!"* and *"Loved your recent post"* (without naming it) both flag mass outreach.
- **The multi-step ask.** Asking for a call, a referral, AND a piece of feedback in the same message gets none of them.
